Tagline: Long-time member writes to the Chronicle in gratitude for the January banana article.
In the past there was a section of the Chronicle dedicated to letters to the editor where I would have been able to thank Nathalie Remond for her January piece called “A Ray of Hope for Workers in the Banana Industry?”. A quick message to the current editor, Benjamin Miller, got an equally quick response saying that he would welcome members’ letters. Hopefully, other Karma members will chime in in the future on this and other matters in future monthly newsletters.
While I do almost all my shopping at Karma and have little love for supermarkets, including Longo’s parent company Sobey’s, like Nathalie I give full credit to Longo’s for joining Karma in carrying only Fair Trade bananas. The names Dole, Del Monte, and Chiquita have for far too long dominated banana sales and been synonymous with exploitation, violence, and corruption in that enormous industry. Thanks to the Karma staff and Food Issues Committee, those brands haven’t found their way into our store in a long time. All Karma members should be proud that we lead the way when it comes to ethical grocery shopping.
