On Wednesday, September 7, Karma’s Board hosted a two-hour meeting, informing about 30 members of the reasons why we need to restructure our membership model and move it to a more rewards-based system. Revising our membership model aims to better serve our current members and to attract new members, which is critical to rebuilding a healthy membership base for our food coop. The pandemic has reduced the number of members, active members, and sales greatly, and we must increase memberships and sales in order to secure our future.
We looked at the structures of successful co-ops in the U.S. and in Canada, and we looked at some of the benefits that they offer members and the community, which we can build into our own membership model. The presentation is available for all members to review with summary notes on the discussions added to the end of the document. A member survey will be coming soon to gather member feedback about possible elements of a new membership structure, to learn more about our members’ preferences and to understand how we can best grow our membership at this critical moment in our history.
You can download the presentation from Karma’s Board page on our website. The pdf is under the 2022 Annual General Meeting section of the webpage: https://karmacoop.org/members/governance-committees/board-of-directors/
