Personal reflections on Justice, Truth, and Reconciliation

Author: Andrea Dawber

September 30, 2022 marks Canada’s second National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, intentionally chosen to coincide with the grassroots National Orange Shirt Day. This day of observance is an opportunity for us all to reflect, listen, and learn about the history and ongoing impacts of the residential school system, colonization, sixties scoop, etc. In the last year, the bones of 4,000 more children have been discovered and that number will continue to grow as more communities search for their children who did not come home. Below are some of the many Indigenous-led organizations whose work is transforming the lives of Indigenous people and making Canada a better place for us all:

First Nations Child & Family Caring Society / Native Child and Family Services of Toronto Native Canadian Centre of Toronto / Canadian Roots Exchange / Indspire

In the words of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, the head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, “Education got us into this mess and education will get us out”. Educating myself about the lived experiences of Indigenous peoples and their cultures, and supporting Indigenous organizations are two ways I approach reconciliation.
